Italians are Cape Verde’s largest foreign tourist group

Over 125,000 tourists visited Cape Verde in the first six months of this year, according to official statistics.

The National Statistics Institute (INE) said 125,385 visitors checked in at Cape Verde’s hotels in the first half of 2006, an increase of 33 percent compared to the same period in 2005.

Sal Island continues to be the most popular tourist destination in the archipelago, attracting 66.8 percent of total overnight stays, followed by Santiago Island, 16.5 percent, and Sao Vicente, 8.4 percent.

The biggest group of overseas visitors to Cape Verde in the first six months of 2006 were from Italy (27.5 percent) followed by Portugal (22.2 percent) and Germany (15.1 percent).
