The Guardia Civil and the National Police Force have launched a joint operation in the province of Alicante aimed at tracking down mafia gangs living in rented accommodation.

In an operation that first started over six months ago, but which has only recently been disclosed, the security forces have built a data base after inspecting the identity papers of all those renting apartments or homes in the province, focusing in particular on the Vega Baja and Marina Alta areas.

A spokesman for the Guardia Civil also revealed that the operation is being undertaken "as much to protect the general public from these gangs as the owners of the homes that are rented."
