The Pierre Moscovici Report
adopted by the European
Parliament's Committee on
Foreign Affairs on Thursday
reaffirms the support for
Romania's entry to the
European Union on Jan. 1,
2007, Romanian Foreign
Ministry's spokeswoman Corina
Vintan said.
The European law-making
body will hold a vote on the
document in a mini-plenary
session on Nov. 29. The
Romanian Foreign Ministry is
looking forward with
confidence to this vote,
Vintan said.
The Moscovici Report backs
the completion of the
Accession Treaty's
ratification process as soon
as possible, it reflects the
progress made by Romania on
implementing the domestic
reforms with a view to the EU
membership and it
congratulates the Romanian
Government on the concrete
results scored.
"We continue to pay
attention to those areas where
the draft report points out
the need to strengthen the
reforms so as to fully meet
the accession standards," the
spokeswoman said.
The Moscovici Report on
Romania's accession to the
European Union was adopted on
Thursday with a range of
amendments by the Committee on
Foreign Affairs by 51 votes
and one abstention.
The main change in the
document refers to the
situation of orphans. The
Committee adopted an amendment
replacing all the other
amendments put forward by the
Commission on Equal Chances
and Women's Rights, namely it
suggests that the reforms on
the Romanian adoptions and
child protection be monitored
after Jan. 1, with the
monitoring to be conducted by
the Commission on Civil
Liberties, Justice and Home
Affairs.
