Romanian wine producer expects export boom after EU accession

Romanian wine producer Vincon Vrancea is expecting an export boom after the country's anticipated integration into the European Union, local media said on Monday.

The company, which currently exports 5 percent of its output to foreign countries, estimates a rising demand for powerful Romanian brands with the EU expanding to 27 members on Jan. 1 to include Romania and Bulgaria.

Among the best known of Vincon's products are Beciul Romanesc, Comoara Pivnitei , Vita Romaneasca Proles Pontica, Cabernet Auslese and Galbena de Odobesi, Muscatel and Golden.

The Romanian wine market hit 350 million euros (448 million U.S. dollars) in 2005, with a rise projected at 450 million euros (576 million dollars) in 2006.

Local wine producers sold 270,000 hectoliters on external markets in 2005, valued at 17.8 million euros (22.8 million dollars).
